Scholarship Opportunities

Army ROTC offers scholarships which cover either the full cost of tuition and fees or room and board. Additionally, there is a $1,200 annual book allowance and a tax free monthly subsistence allowance of $420 per month. Upon completing your junior year of high school and once you have received your ACT or SAT results, you are eligible to apply for a scholarship online at goarmy.com/rotc. 

Current MSU students can apply directly through our Scholarship and Enrollment Officer, Mr. Robert Sullivan. He is located in room 113A in Demonstration Hall.  Mr. Sullivan can be reached via email or by phone at (517) 353-3484.

Army Scholarship Opportunity: National Army ROTC Scholarship

The Army provides three and four year scholarships to high school seniors as they progress to college. The application process takes some time and requires several elements. Students can create an account at www.goarmy.com/rotc. Then follow the links to “High School Scholarships” and complete their registration.

Scholarship benefits include…

  • 100% Tuition or Room and Board (whichever is higher)
  • $1200 a year for Books ($600 per semester)
  • Monthly living stipend of $420
  • Scholarship students can request Active Duty, National Guard, or Army Reserve

Application Process includes:

  • Upload SAT/ACT Scores to student dashboard
  • Army Physical Fitness Assessment (1 Min x Push-ups, 1 Min x Sit Ups, 1 Mile Run)
  • High School Transcripts
  • Professor of Military Science Interview. May be conducted at any university with an ROTC Program
  • Two Essays (Why you are applying for an ROTC Scholarship/Typical Week of School)
  • Student Resume (Not required, but highly encouraged)
  • Letters of Recommendation (Not required, but highly encouraged)

Army Scholarship Opportunity: GRFD or Minuteman Scholarship

The Army provides scholarships which are for Guaranteed Reserve Forces Duty (GRFD). These scholarships are available for students who are seeking a commission into the Army National Guard or Army Reserve. This means that once students on this particular scholarship commission, they will be placed in a National Guard unit of their state of choice or in an Army Reserve unit of their choice located anywhere in the United States.

The benefits of these scholarships includes:

  • 100% Tuition or Room & Board (whichever is higher)
  • $1200 a year for books ($600 per semester)
  • Monthly living stipend of $420
  • *Weekend Drill Pay of $297 monthly
  • *$1500 Annual Training Pay

*Students who are on a GRFD or Minuteman Scholarship are required to participate in the Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP) and will receive additional pay due to their monthly drill with a National Guard or Reserve unit of their choice.

MSU Campus Based Scholarships: 3 year and 2 year

The Department of Military Science offers campus-based scholarship opportunities to students who are not already on scholarship or contracted with the US Army. There are 3, 2.5 and 2 year scholarships available to students who meet the following criteria:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Must have a 2.5 cumulative GPA at the time of contracting
  • Must meet the Army Height/Weight standard according to AR 670-1
  • Must pass the Army Physical Fitness Test according to AR 670-1
  • Must pass a DODMERB medical physical
  • Must have no civil convictions
  • Must be in good standing with the Department of Military Science

We also have scholarships for students in Nursing, STEM, Liberal Arts and for graduate students. Students can compete for these scholarships by participating in all ROTC-related events and extracurricular activities. A student's GPA and physical fitness will also determine if he/she is eligible or competitive for a scholarship. The instructors for each class create an order of merit list of students laying the groundwork for working toward an ROTC Scholarship. Room and Board Scholarships

Michigan State University has granted the Department of Military Science several dozen one-year room and board scholarships. These are extremely competitive. Cadets are screened via a merit-based scholarship board presided over by the Professor of Military Science (PMS). Once awarded a room and board scholarship, the Cadet receives a lump sum of $10,000 deposited into his/her MSU student account to cover his/her monthly fees. Special Awards

In addition to the numerous scholarship opportunities, cadets can earn additional awards based on leadership ability, GPA, physical fitness, and contributions to the Spartan Battalion.
