Colonel Glenn W. Alday

Colonel Alday served in the United States Marine Corps as an enlisted man for two and one-half years. Two of those were in Tientsin, China, repatriating Japanese occupation troops to Japan; after this mission was accomplished, the Marines served as a stabilizing force in North China. He then served in the Marine Reserves until joining the ROTC at Michigan State College in 1950. He graduated and was commissioned in the United States Army as an infantry officer in 1952. He served as a physical education instructor with the 200th Infantry Regiment, 31st Infantry Division (ID), Camp Atterbury, IN. He also served as an infantry platoon leader with F Company 32 Infantry Regiment, 7th ID, Korea. After active duty, he served with the 70th Tank Battalion, 70th ID, Pontiac, MI. While assigned with the 70th ID, he was a battery commander with the 325th Field Artillery Battalion, company commander, communications officer, battalion S-3, and battalion commander at Fort Custer, MI. Colonel Alday served three summer tours with one tour at Sixth United States Army Corps at Fort Benjamin Harrison, IN; and two tours with Fifth U.S. Army Headquarters Fort Sheridan, IL, in the Operations and Training sections. He served ten summer tours at Camp Grayling, MI, as administrative officer with the Fifth U.S. Army Evaluation Board and as a mobilization augmentee to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Region IV as assistant to the director. Colonel Alday retired from the Army Reserve in 1986 with more than thirty-seven years combined on active and reserve duty.

Colonel Alday’s military education includes Associate Infantry Company Officers Course, Ranger School, Transportation Officers Familiarization Course, the Transportation Company Officers Career Course, and Command and General Staff College. He holds a bachelor of science degree from Michigan State College and a master of science degree from Michigan State University, including advanced work from MSU.

His awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, China Service Medal, Army Forces Reserve Medal, Korean Service Medal, Army Reserve Achievement Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and the Ranger Tab.

In recognition of the great credit his exemplary service, superior leadership, and dedication to duty has brought to Michigan State University and the United State Army, Colonel Glenn W. Alday is inducted into the MSU Army ROTC Hall of Fame, this thirteenth day of December two thousand and three, in the one hundred nineteenth year of Military Science at MSU.
