Colonel James C. Hogle

James C. Hogle began his military career upon graduation from the Illinois Military School in Abingdon, Illinois, in June 1930. He was designated brevet second lieutenant in the Illinois National Guard by the state’s governor.

He attended Michigan State College, receiving his bachelor’s of science degree in civil engineering in June 1934 and went on to University of Michigan earning a master’s degree in civil engineering in June 1939.  In July 1941, James joined the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant.

Colonel Hogle was stationed in Missouri, South Dakota, Virginia, California, and Tokyo, Japan, where he served as the assistant chief of Mining and Geology Division for the Allied Powers until his resignation from the Army in June 1946 as a lieutenant colonel. In July 1947 he rejoined the Army as a captain and in 1949 was assigned to Korea where he served as principle advisor to the chief of engineers of the Korean Army; he returned to the U.S. in 1951 and served as chief, Facilities Branch, Material Division, Special Weapons Project, and later as assistant chief, Services Division, Field Command of the Special Weapons Project; he became the commanding officer of the 24th Engineer Group with the mission of construction support of the Army and Air Force in German and southern France; in June 1959 he became deputy district engineer of the Eastern Ocean District, responsible for military construction in Iceland, Greenland, Labrador, Newfoundland, and the Azores; and in March 1964 he was appointed deputy director of Installations and Services, U.S. Army Material Command, Washington, D.C., where he remained until his retirement on December 1, 1966. Upon retirement he joined Washington Gas and Light Company as senior engineer and resided in Alexandria, Virginia, until his death on May 4, 2001.

Colonel Hogle’s military education includes: U.S. Army War College, Command and General Staff College, and the Advanced Engineer Officers Course.

His awards include the Army Commendation Medal with subsequent Oak Leaf Clusters and the Legion of Merit Award.

In recognition of the great credit his exemplary service, superior leadership, and dedication to duty has brought to Michigan State University and the United States Army, Colonel James C. Hogle is inducted into the MSU Army ROTC Hall of Fame, this nineteenth day of April two thousand and five, in the one hundred twenty-first year of Military Science at MSU.
