MS 490 (Department Approval)

Independent Study in Military Science

MS490-new

This course does not have a set topic or instructor; it comprises individual research in areas related to military science. MS 490 is offered in Fall & Spring of every year. Course credits are variable from 1 to 4 credits. A student may earn a maximum of 4 credits in all enrollments for this course. Department approval is required to enroll.

Topics accepted in the past include:

  • Historical Battles and Campaigns
  • Future Combat Systems
  • Analysis of Current Events
  • Military Reading Analysis

 

Application

  1. Freshman or Sophomore with MS3 placement.
  2. Juniors or Seniors.
  3. Used as an alternative course for those completion Cadets who have met Army ROTC requirements awaiting graduation, or vice versa.
  4. Authorized credits based off of project; not to exceed 4 credit hours in an academic year.
  5. Department approval is required to enroll.
  1. Required to attend Lab.
  2. Required to attend Physical Training (stay fit for BOLC).
  3. Report weekly to assigned Instructor.
  4. Required to complete Instructor-directed project.
  1. Obtain written Pre-Approval from PMS to enroll in MS 490.
  2. Complete MSU Independent Study Application form 
  3. Secure signatures on the form from MS 490 Instructor, Academic Advisor & PMS.
  4. Send via email the Independent Study Application form with affixed signatures from Instructor, Advisor and PMS to the Military Science Department Operations Manager. (Mrs. Feldpausch) email: feldpa15@msu.edu.
